Earlier Report Observations

Ethiopia's production and market volume of fresh or chilled edible brassicas experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After maintaining relative stability around 1 240 thousand tons in 2018-2019, output entered a downward phase, dropping to 1 152 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 1 086 thousand tons in 2021.

The market reversed sharply in 2022, with production jumping to 1 376 thousand tons, representing an increase of over 25% compared to the previous year. This surge, however, was short-lived, as production fell back to 1 205 thousand tons in 2023, bringing the market volume close to levels seen earlier in the period.

Overall, the edible brassicas sector in Ethiopia displayed volatility, with the 2022 peak standing out as an anomalous year amidst a generally fluctuating trend.
