The Austrian market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas expanded steadily from 2018 to 2021, with total volume growing from 80 504 t to 97 699 t. This increase of over 20% reflected a period of rising availability. The market reached its highest point in 2021 before entering a downward trend over the next two years.

Domestic production rose consistently from 58 110 t in 2018 to 74 030 t in 2022, supporting market growth during the earlier period. Imports, after peaking at 32 201 t in 2019, subsequently declined. By 2023, a reduction in production to 63 640 t, coupled with lower import levels, contributed to a total market volume of 86 793 t.

Austria's production of edible brassicas has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 69 800 tonnes, marking a 6.1% rise compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 3.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 58 110 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 14.1%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant increase of 13.2%.

Exports edible brassicas from Austria

Exports in kind, t

Austria's exports of edible brassicas have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 3 851 tonnes, showing a slight decrease of 1.5% year-on-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 14.7%, which translates to an average annual decline of 5.2%. The highest export volume was in 2018 at 5 605 tonnes, when exports surged by 24.1%. However, the largest drop occurred in 2019 with a 30.2% decrease.

Austria's edible brassicas exports in value terms have decreased for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 5 178 thousand US dollars, down by 8.2% from the previous year. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 5 993 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 16.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovenia, Hungary, and Germany were the main markets for Austria's edible brassicas exports in value terms. Slovenia accounted for 40.1% of exports, Hungary for 25.0%, and Germany for 16.7%, together making up 81.8% of total export value.

Austria imported 31 135 tonnes of edible brassicas in 2020, a 3.3% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports rose by 6.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.2%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 27 999 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.9%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the highest volume at 32 201 tonnes and the largest increase of 15.0%.

During 2017–2020, Italy, Germany, and Spain were the primary sources for Austria's edible brassicas imports by volume. Italy contributed 44.2% of imports, Germany 17.0%, and Spain 11.7%, together representing 72.9% of total import volume.
