The market for fresh edible brassicas in Moldova underwent significant volume changes between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 23 516 tonnes, the market size contracted steadily to a low of 17 773 tonnes in 2021, a reduction of nearly 6 000 tonnes. This decline was mirrored by domestic production, which fell from 19 598 tonnes to 14 947 tonnes over the same period. A sharp recovery followed in 2022, with the market expanding to 22 495 tonnes and production rising to 16 719 tonnes, before a slight market contraction to 21 423 tonnes in 2023.

Trade flows showed notable volatility. Imports fluctuated, peaking at 6 473 tonnes in 2022 and contributing to that year's market growth. Exports, while remaining a smaller share of the market, grew substantially from 145 tonnes in 2018 to 1 562 tonnes in 2023. In 2024, imports reached 6 074 tonnes and exports more than doubled from the previous year to 2 518 tonnes.

A key development in 2024 was the authorization for Moldova to export fresh poultry to the European Union. This opening of the EU market for Moldovan agricultural products created favorable conditions for other segments, including edible brassicas, and supported the notable surge in export volumes that year.

Moldova's edible brassicas production has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 15 700 tons, representing a 15.4% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 37.7%, which translates to an average annual decline of 14.6%.

Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 145 tons, then surged to 424 tons in 2020, marking a 2.9-fold increase from the 2018 trough. Compared to 2019, the 2020 figure represents a significant gain of 52.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 54.2% drop, while the most substantial increase was recorded in 2019 at 91.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Romania and Russia remained the primary destinations for Moldova's edible brassicas exports in volume terms, together accounting for 83.0% of total shipments. Other trading partners each held significantly smaller shares.

After two years of growth, Moldova's edible brassicas exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 117 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 1.1% decrease from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 158%, with a compound annual growth rate of 37.2%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 119 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 68.2%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Romania and Russia continued to be the main destinations for Moldova's edible brassicas exports in value terms, jointly representing 82.8% of total export value. Other partners accounted for considerably smaller portions.

Following two years of growth, Moldova's edible brassicas imports in volume terms declined. In 2020, imports stood at 3 593 tons, showing a substantial 21.3% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 38.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.5%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 4 563 tons, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 56.9%.
