The market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas in Hong Kong grew from 551.8 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 618.1 thousand tonnes in 2020. This increase was supported by strong import volumes from China, the dominant supplier, and rising consumer demand driven by health-conscious dietary trends.

After 2020, the market volume contracted to 566.6 thousand tonnes in 2021 and then fell sharply to 318.5 thousand tonnes in 2022. During this period, new product varieties such as Napa cabbage hearts emerged, diversifying the offering, while overall import supply from China decreased substantially.

By 2023, the market declined further to 297.0 thousand tonnes. China remained the key source of imports, though shipment levels were significantly lower than in the peak years of 2019-2020.

Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 6.4%, equivalent to an average annual rate of 2.1%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 227.6 million US dollars, reflecting a 21.2% decline from the previous year.
