This contraction was primarily driven by severe and repeated outbreaks of avian influenza, which weakened the fattened duck sector from 2021 onward, drastically affecting production and meat availability.

The market reached its lowest point in 2022, with consumption falling by 26.9% under the combined pressure of the disease and rising global feed costs for corn and soybean meal. A partial recovery followed in 2023, lifting the market volume to 133.9 thousand tonnes as the sector began to rebound and consumption data was recalibrated, reflecting improved poultry demand.
