In 2018, Africa produced 658.9 thousand metric tons of dried shelled pigeon peas. That year, South Africa announced a memorandum of understanding with India to export up to 1 000 tons per year of pigeon peas, opening a new market access channel for the region. Production then dipped to 638.2 thousand tons in 2019 before jumping to 803.5 thousand tons in 2020.

Output declined to 721.3 thousand tons in 2021 and edged down further to 705.2 thousand tons in 2022. The market reversed sharply in 2023, with production surging to 951.4 thousand tons. This growth was propelled by a major increase in exports from Mozambique to India under a 2023‑2026 memorandum of understanding, which committed over 230 000 tons of pigeon peas and strengthened demand for African production. Concurrently, customs delays in Mozambique that held back roughly 150 000 tons destined for India highlighted supply‑chain bottlenecks and contributed to higher Indian prices, creating additional incentive for expanded output.

In 2024, exports from the region remained substantial at 598.2 thousand tons, while imports were minimal at 1.2 thousand tons. The year saw legal uncertainty emerge as one of Mozambique’s largest pigeon‑pea exporters, the ETG conglomerate, entered arbitration seeking €100 million after its assets were seized, signaling potential risks to export stability.

Africa's production of dried shelled pigeon peas rebounded in 2020 after two consecutive years of decline. In 2019, output had fallen to its lowest point of the period at 638.2 thousand tonnes. However, 2020 saw a sharp turnaround, with production surging by 25.9% to reach 803.5 thousand tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2018, when production fell by 24.0%. Over the entire 2017-2020 timeframe, overall production decreased by 7.4%, which translates to a compound annual growth rate of -2.5%.
