Production of dried shelled cow peas in Africa displayed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Output rose from 8 815 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 9 556 thousand tonnes in 2020, then fell sharply to 8 545 thousand tonnes in 2021. A strong recovery followed in 2022, with production reaching 9 821 thousand tonnes, before easing to 9 198 thousand tonnes in 2023.

Available trade data for 2024 shows imports of 7 thousand tonnes and exports of 30 thousand tonnes, resulting in a net export balance for the continent that year.
