The market volume for dried shelled pigeon peas in ECOWAS declined from 15 203 t in 2018 to 11 492 t in 2021. This downward trend was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which disrupted supply chains and reduced demand, while fluctuating export prices also affected production decisions during these years.

Market volume recovered to 13 194 t in 2022 as rising export prices encouraged increased domestic production. However, in 2023, volume fell sharply to 7 634 t due to a significant rise in exports, which reached 4 065 t and reduced domestic availability.

ECOWAS production of dried shelled pigeon peas declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 12 555 tonnes, which represents a 9.5% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 7%, with an average annual decline of 2.4%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 14 088 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 4.4%.
