The export data shows irregular changes, pointing to a volatile market. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 28.0 thousand tons, while exports peaked in 2020 at 83.5 thousand tons—a 143.8% jump from 2019. This created a threefold gap between the high and low points. Eastern Africa's dried shelled peas exports in value terms have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 50.7 million US dollars, a sharp rise of 47.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, exports grew by 72.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 20.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 20.5 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 30.1%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 68.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the value of dried shelled peas exports from Eastern Africa was spread across a wide range of partner countries. After two years of decline, dried shelled peas imports into Eastern Africa rebounded. In 2020, imports reached 100.0 million US dollars, a steep increase of 58.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, however, imports decreased by 21.1%, with an average annual decline of 7.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 63.0 million US dollars, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 at 41.1%.
