Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the dried shelled peas market volume in Peru showed significant fluctuations. In 2018, the market reached 85 931 metric tons, supported by agricultural sector growth driven by domestic demand and investment, along with strengthened agro-exports. The following year, volume fell to 77 025 metric tons, likely due to persistent limitations in technological and financial support for small producers. In 2020, the market expanded to 95 346 metric tons as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted local production, increasing reliance on imports, while rising consumer interest in healthy eating boosted demand for legumes.

After 2020, market volume declined to 81 697 metric tons by 2022, partly because of tighter global food import restrictions that affected supplies. The approval of the National Agricultural Policy 2021-2030 helped raise domestic production, but this was insufficient to offset the import contraction. In 2023, the market recovered to 85 002 metric tons, aided by the implementation of the Labeling Law, which encouraged product reformulation, and the sustained consumer trend toward healthier eating.
