Africa's production of cucumbers and gherkins declined in 2020 after two consecutive years of growth. That year, the continent produced 1 495 thousand tons, marking a 5.3% decrease from 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually increased by 11.2%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.6%. The peak was reached in 2019 with 1 578 thousand tons, when production surged by 15.8%.

Following two years of expansion, the value of cucumbers and gherkins production in Africa dropped in 2020. Output was valued at 1 330 million US dollars that year, representing a significant 22.6% decline compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, production value grew by 4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 717 million US dollars, when it jumped by 30.4%.

Exports cucumbers and gherkins from Africa

In 2020, Africa exported 8 692 tons of cucumbers and gherkins, a 27.1% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 26%, averaging 8.0% growth per year. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 6 840 tons, when exports fell by 27.2%. In contrast, 2018 saw the highest volume at 9 396 tons, with a substantial 36.2% increase.

Between 2017 and 2020, Spain, France, and Portugal remained the top buyers of African cucumbers and gherkins by volume. Spain accounted for 42.0% of exports, France for 8.5%, and Portugal for 2.9%. Together, these three countries represented 53.5% of total export volumes.

In 2019, exports declined by 18.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain, France, and Portugal continued to be the leading buyers in value terms. Spain made up 45.1% of export value, France 6.9%, and Portugal 3.6%. Collectively, they accounted for 55.6% of total export value.

Imports cucumbers and gherkins to Africa

Africa imported 2 414 tons of cucumbers and gherkins in 2020, a sharp 29.2% rise from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 40.6%, averaging 12.0% per year. The largest decrease occurred in 2019, with an 18.3% drop, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 33.1%.
