The market for dried shelled beans in South-eastern Asia underwent a sustained contraction between 2018 and 2022, with its total volume falling from 3.2 million tons to 2 million tons. This decline was supported by a gradual reduction in domestic production, which decreased by nearly 4% over the period, and a sharp, persistent drop in import volumes after 2018.

A clear reversal took place in 2023, as the market expanded by 15% to reach 2.3 million tons. This rebound coincided with a slight rise in imports and a significant reduction in exports, indicating a shift in net trade that increased domestic availability.

After two years of decline, exports of dried shelled beans from South-eastern Asia rebounded in 2020. Shipments reached 1 187 thousand tonnes, showing a significant increase of 41.0% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 12.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.1%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 842 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 19.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, China, and Pakistan were the top destinations for dried shelled bean exports from South-eastern Asia. India accounted for 37.6% of exports in volume, China for 21.3%, and Pakistan for 5.6%. Together, these three countries represented 64.5% of total export flows.

The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 664 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 23.6%.
