Earlier Report Observations

The market for dried shelled chickpeas in Western Asia contracted from 1 088 thousand tons in 2018 to 867 thousand tons in 2021, driven largely by a steep decline in domestic production, which fell by over 180 thousand tons in 2021. Imports fluctuated during this period, while exports showed a gradual increase.

A sustained recovery began in 2022, with market volume growing to 974 thousand tons and then jumping to 1 164 thousand tons in 2023. Production rebounded to 666 thousand tons in 2023, supported by government measures. That year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry provided direct diesel and fertilizer subsidies to chickpea growers, reducing input costs. A separate support for using certified seeds was also introduced to boost yields and production capacity.

In 2024, import volumes rose to 682 thousand tons and exports surged to 268 thousand tons. Official statistics indicated a domestic self-sufficiency rate of 117.5%, reflecting a supply surplus. To protect local availability, the Ministry of Trade implemented export restrictions on chickpeas within the year.
