Earlier Report Observations

Brazilian cottonseed oil-cake production showed significant volatility between 2018 and 2023, with output swinging from 1.3 million tons to a low of 1.0 million tons before reaching peaks of 1.7 million tons. These movements were primarily tied to the availability of cottonseed, which depends on cotton planting decisions, and demand from the biodiesel and animal feed sectors.

The high production level in 2018 was propelled by a substantial 65% expansion in cotton planted area over the preceding four seasons, which doubled cottonseed supply. This was complemented by the entry of a new major player, Icofort Agroindustrial, which inaugurated one of Brazil's most modern cotton oil extraction plants, increasing processing capacity. After a contraction in 2019, output jumped sharply in 2020, supported by continued area expansion and growing use of cotton oil for biodiesel production, as several plants were authorized to use this feedstock.

Production dipped again in 2022 due to weak demand for cottonseed cake and oil, which led to falling prices in key regions like Mato Grosso. The market rebounded strongly in 2023, reaching 1.8 million tons. This recovery was aided by investments in extraction technology to improve quality and by the increased competitiveness of cottonseed cake as an animal feed protein, influenced by broader tax policy changes that affected the vegetable protein and oil markets.
