Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the Swedish corn oil market was influenced by shifting consumer preferences towards healthier, non-GMO products, which moderated initial demand. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains and consumption patterns, yet domestic production commenced at 598 tons, resulting in a market volume of 1 392 tons valued at 1.6 million USD.
The market stabilized and grew from 2021 to 2022, with production more than doubling to 1 323 tons and market volume reaching 1 874 tons worth 3.2 million USD. This expansion was supported by continued consumer interest in healthy and sustainable oils, alongside the dominant role of global industry players like Archer Daniels Midland and Cargill.
Sweden's biofuel policy became a primary driver from 2023 onward. The government's decision to lower the biofuel mandate to 6% from 2024, later revised to 10% from 2025, significantly affected demand for corn oil as a biodiesel feedstock. This regulatory shift led to a surge in imports, which climbed to 7 913 tons in 2024, while exports fell to 800 tons, coinciding with capacity expansions by biofuel producers Preem and St1.
