The South African corn oil market expanded slightly in 2019, but its volume contracted sharply in 2020. This drop coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting supply chains and a temporary suspension of customs duties on crude and refined corn oil until mid-2022, which made exports more attractive and led to a significant increase in overseas shipments.

In the following years, local maize supplies became more volatile due to drought conditions and some farmers shifting from maize to soybean cultivation, affecting raw material availability for oil production. Concurrently, rising global demand for biofuels and healthier cooking oils provided underlying support for consumption, contributing to a partial market recovery by 2023.
