Earlier Report Observations

Corn oil production in Southern Europe remained relatively stable between 2018 and 2023, with annual output fluctuating between 119 and 122 thousand tonnes. This steadiness was supported by increasing global demand for natural vegetable oils, driven by consumer attention to health and sustainability, as well as technological improvements in production processes.

The market volume for corn oil in the region declined from 145 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 117 thousand tonnes in 2023. The sharp drop was largely attributable to a steep fall in imports, which decreased from 80 thousand tonnes to 23 thousand tonnes over the period. The implementation of the EU Regulation 2023/915, setting stricter aflatoxin limits for unprocessed maize, raised compliance costs for exporters and restrained import flows into Southern Europe. Additionally, poor agricultural yields in the European Union due to climate change contributed to tighter maize supply and affected oil availability.

In 2024, regulatory and environmental factors continued to shape the market. The ongoing effect of the aflatoxin regulation, combined with adverse weather conditions in major maize-producing countries and increased global demand for maize in ethanol production, influenced trade patterns and the availability of corn oil in the region.
