Earlier Report Observations

Following the European Union's update to the Renewable Energy Directive in 2018, which ended transport emission reduction targets that had driven palm oil imports for biofuels, Swedish imports fell to 159 thousand tons in 2019. Imports partially recovered to 171 thousand tons in 2020, while domestic production remained at 29 thousand tons.

In 2021, market volume surged to 217 thousand tons, and production doubled to 55 thousand tons. This growth coincided with the global market dominance of fractionated palm oil, which increased the availability of specialized products. However, in 2022, market volume dropped to 183 thousand tons, and production declined to 48 thousand tons.

By 2023, the EU Deforestation Regulation came into force, requiring importers to ensure traceability and sustainability of palm oil. This led to a sharp fall in imports to 108 thousand tons in 2024. Simultaneously, the Swedish chemical industry initiated a shift to certified sustainable palm oil for cosmetics and hygiene products.
