Earlier Report Observations

The coniferous wood fuel market in Hungary opened the period at 266.9 thousand m³ in 2018, supported by an influx of lower-quality raw material from sanitary logging across Europe and boosted demand from state housing renovation subsidies. Market volume then contracted sharply to 161.8 thousand m³ in 2019, before a slight recovery to 163.9 thousand m³ in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic weakened the timber economy while a growing trend of moving to green areas increased demand for fuelwood in suburbs and holiday homes.

The market declined again to 129.8 thousand m³ in 2021, pressured by soaring wood prices driven by rising labor and service costs, coupled with a tightening supply due to reduced illegal logging and imports. A significant turnaround followed in 2022, with volume rising to 160.6 thousand m³, largely driven by the government's launch of a social fuelwood program that introduced regulated prices for up to 10 m³ to help households with rising utility costs, aided by expanded rail infrastructure improving timber distribution. Growth accelerated in 2023, with the market reaching 220.1 thousand m³, sustained by the continued social fuel program and supply pressures from drought and extreme weather affecting forestry.

In the later years, while comprehensive market size data is not available, key influencing factors persisted. In 2024, fuelwood prices initially softened due to weaker demand from a mild winter and market corrections, but an upward trend began in the second half. The market continued to be shaped by labor shortages and climate change transforming the forestry sector. Through 2025, the government maintained its social fuelwood program for needy residents in settlements under 5,000 people, with no price caps introduced as supply was deemed sufficient.
