Earlier Report Observations
In 2018, the market study initiated for Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee signaled a strategic focus on international market expansion. However, the total market volume declined over the next two years, falling to 5 787 t by 2020. A recovery began in 2021, supported by a Caribbean Export Development Agency project aimed at increasing the sector's access to the EU market, which helped lift the market size to 6 076 t. This growth accelerated following the Agriculture Ministry's 2022 Revitalization Plan for Coffee, which included a large-scale program to replace aging coffee trees with 1.5 million new seedlings over a decade to address soil quality and low productivity.
The positive trend continued in 2023 as new investment entered the sector, notably through a partnership between Nestle Jamaica and the Agriculture Ministry to increase high mountain coffee production. This injection of capacity and expertise contributed to a further market expansion, with volume reaching 7 827 t, completing a strong rebound from the 2020 low.
