Earlier Report Observations
The market for fresh lettuce and chicory in Jamaica contracted in 2019 to 14,885 t, down from 15,663 t in 2018, before stabilizing at around 15,032 t in 2020. A period of significant growth followed, with market volume expanding to 16,990 t in 2021 and further to 19,136 t in 2022. This expansion was supported by the longstanding Safeguard Act of 2001, which provides advantages to local producers over imported fresh produce, thereby encouraging domestic production and market growth.
In 2023, the market retracted to 17,554 t as local production fell. This decline coincided with severe weather events, including the impact of Hurricane Beryl and drought conditions, which strained domestic supply. Imports of lettuce and chicory rose sharply by 123% during the year, partially offsetting the drop in local output. Throughout this period, mandatory labeling regulations enforced by the Bureau of Standards Jamaica continued to shape market access and compliance for all products.
