Coffee production in Ghana increased steadily from 1 661 thousand tons in 2018 to 2 066 thousand tons in 2022, despite historical sector challenges such as weak institutional support and an unregulated market structure. The willingness of smallholder farmers to shift towards coffee production, supported by concentrated efforts in forested zones, contributed to this growth.

In 2023, production declined to 1 944 thousand tons and market size fell to 1 436 thousand tons. During this period, growing interest from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and other partners highlighted the sector's potential, with its contribution to GDP rising. Global supply disruptions and climate volatility also affected coffee prices and production dynamics.

The industry gained momentum in 2024 with the launch of the 2024/2025 coffee season, emphasizing sustainable agricultural practices and youth involvement. The International Trade Centre's Alliances for Action program provided free seedlings, training, and market access to farmers, while Ghana Coffee Week 2024 promoted the industry and encouraged youth engagement.

Africa's production of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 1 883 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.8% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 29.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 9.1%.

Africa's production value for coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 4 979 million US dollars, showing a significant rise of 11.1% compared to the year before. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 9.2%, with an annualized rate of 3.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 4 360 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 4.4%.

Exports coffee, husks, skins and substitutes from Africa

Exports in kind, K t

In 2020, Africa's export volume of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes reached 747.7 thousand tonnes, representing a slight decrease of 6.1% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 17.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.5%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 542.2 thousand tonnes, with a decline of 14.8%, while the peak was in 2019 at 796.0 thousand tonnes, which saw a substantial increase of 46.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export destinations for coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes from Africa were quite diverse. Germany accounted for 13.3% of exports in kind, Italy for 11.3%, and Belgium for 8.5%, together making up just 33.0% of total flows. The remaining 67.0% was distributed among a wide range of other countries.

Exports in value, M $ US

Africa's exports of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes in value terms have risen for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 1 977 million US dollars, remaining largely stable compared to 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 424 million US dollars, which experienced a sharp decline of 28.8%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 38.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the export value of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes from Africa was spread across various markets. Germany contributed 12.9% of exports in value terms, the United States 10.6%, and Belgium 8.9%, collectively accounting for 32.4% of total flows. The other 67.6% came from numerous other destinations.

In 2020, Africa's imports of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes in volume terms stood at 289.3 thousand tonnes, showing little change from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 20.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.4%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 221.8 thousand tonnes, with a decline of 7.6%, while the highest was in 2019 at 289.8 thousand tonnes, which saw an increase of 30.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, imports of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes to Africa in kind were characterized by a broad distribution across suppliers. Vietnam accounted for 27.0% of imports in kind, Indonesia for 11.8%, and Brazil for 8.7%, together making up only 47.4% of total flows.

Imports in value, M $ US

Following a two-year decline, Africa's imports of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes in value terms increased in 2020. The import value reached 775 million US dollars, up by 4.6% from 2019. However, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 10.3%, with an annualized rate of decline of 3.5%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 742 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 8.2%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brazil were the top suppliers of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes to Africa in value terms, accounting for 25.1%, 13.0%, and 8.0% of imports, respectively. Together, they made up 46.1% of total imports, with the rest coming from a diverse array of smaller partners.
