Earlier Report Observations

The coconut oil market in ECOWAS is characterized by a dominance of small-scale farmers and traditional production methods. Market volume stood at 39 350 tons in 2018 but began to decline in subsequent years. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused significant disruptions in international supply chains, contributing to a reduction in market volume to 33 126 tons.

Market volume continued to decline through 2021 and 2022, reaching a low of 24 274 tons, even as consumer preferences shifted toward natural, organic, and fair-trade products, and producers adopted more sustainable practices.

In 2023, market volume rebounded sharply to 35 848 tons, a 48% increase from 2022. This recovery was driven by global supply chain disruptions due to climatic and economic factors, which affected the availability and trade flows of coconut oil in the region.
