Domestic production demonstrated consistent growth throughout the period, rising from 41 661 tons to 46 448 tons between 2018 and 2023. In contrast, import volumes experienced sharp volatility, peaking at 7 175 tons in 2020 then declining dramatically to 249 tons by 2023, which played a key role in the market's post-2020 downturn.

By 2023, the market volume stood at 46 697 tons, with locally produced fats meeting the overwhelming majority of regional demand as imports diminished to negligible levels.

After two years of growth, ECOWAS's production of beef, sheep, or goat fat declined. In 2020, the region produced 43 496 tonnes, showing only a minor year-over-year fluctuation compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 8.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.7%. The highest production volume was recorded in 2019 at 43 617 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 4.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Denmark, and Spain were the primary buyers of beef, sheep, or goat fat from ECOWAS. China accounted for 51.5% of exports in kind, Denmark for 23.9%, and Spain for 23.0%. Together, these three countries comprised 98.4% of total exports in kind.

Market performance exhibited noticeable fluctuations during this period. Import volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 2 500 tonnes and peaked in 2017, showing a 20-fold difference. In 2020, ECOWAS imported 7 175 tonnes of beef, sheep, or goat fat, representing a dramatic 61.4% increase from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 95.1%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 77.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States and Uruguay were the key sources for imports in kind, jointly accounting for 83.5% of total flows. Other trading partners individually played a much less significant role.

ECOWAS's imports of beef, sheep, or goat fat declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 6 192 thousand US dollars, marking a significant 19.5% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 85.2%, with an average annual decline of 47.1%.

During 2017-2020, the United States, Uruguay, and Australia formed the main cluster of markets for imports in value terms. The United States accounted for 40.9% of import value, Uruguay for 28.4%, and Australia for 24.3%. Together, these three countries represented 93.7% of total import flows.
