Earlier Report Observations

The coconut oil market in Southern Asia expanded from 686 thousand tons in 2018 to 755 thousand tons in 2020. This growth was initially driven by government-funded initiatives, including the establishment of new processing units for value-added products like virgin coconut oil and a US$ 10 million investment for coconut cultivation area expansion. By 2019, a significant rise in domestic prices, fueled by increased demand and export growth, provided further momentum for market volume.

Market volume then contracted to 731 thousand tons in 2021 and fell further to 669 thousand tons in 2022, before recovering to 723 thousand tons in 2023. These fluctuations reflected notable shifts in import levels alongside changes in domestic production output during the period.

In 2024, prolonged droughts and recurring heatwaves in key coconut-growing states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala significantly reduced copra yields and coconut oil extraction. An early monsoon onset shortened the harvesting season, limiting mature coconut availability for processing. These supply constraints led to sharp price increases and prompted industry advocacy for temporary easing of import restrictions on coconut oil.
