The market for cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste in Poland experienced marked shifts between 2018 and 2023. Domestic consumption, measured as market volume, rose from 1 683 tons in 2018 to a peak of 2 604 tons in 2020, followed by a sustained decline to 1 489 tons in 2023.

This trajectory closely followed changes in local production, which increased to over 3 000 tons in 2020 before falling back to 2 309 tons in 2023. During the same period, export shipments grew steadily, from 450 tons in 2018 to 908 tons in 2022, diverting a larger portion of output away from the domestic market and amplifying the drop in local availability after the 2020 high.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland ranked 28th globally in production volume for cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste, establishing itself as one of the world's leading producers in this category.

Poland's production of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 3 034 tonnes, marking a 13.4% rise from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, production grew by 21.7%, averaging an annual increase of 6.8%. The lowest production was in 2018 at 1 981 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 20.5%. Conversely, the biggest jump occurred in 2019 with a 35.1% increase.

Following a two-year decline, Poland's exports of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste rebounded in 2020. The country shipped 430.4 tonnes, a sharp 64.2% increase compared to 2019. However, from 2017 to 2020, overall exports fell by 16%, translating to an average annual decrease of 5.6%. The export volume hit its lowest point in 2019 at 262.1 tonnes, which also recorded the steepest drop of 41.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine and Serbia were the dominant destinations for Poland's exports of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste. Ukraine accounted for 58.5% of total export volume, while Serbia made up 26.7%, together representing 85.2% of all exports. The remaining volume was distributed among other trading partners.

Poland's export value for cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 261.3 thousand US dollars, a 58.8% gain from the year before. Over the 2017–2020 span, export value increased by 60.6%, averaging an annual growth rate of 17.1%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 132.2 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 18.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ukraine, Serbia, and Iran were the primary buyers of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste from Poland in value terms. Ukraine led with 34.8% of total export value, followed by Serbia at 17.3% and Iran at 13.0%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 65.0% of Poland's total export value in this category.

In 2020, the country imported a total of 0.0 tonnes, a dramatic 99.6% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports plummeted by 99.9%, with an average annual decrease of 89.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands remained the top supplier of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste to Poland, holding 82.4% of total import volume. The rest of the imports were sourced from a variety of other countries.

Poland's import value for cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 3.5 thousand US dollars, down 62.7% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import value decreased by 96.1%, averaging an annual decline of 66.0%.

In the 2017–2020 period, Germany and the Netherlands were the main sources of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste imports to Poland in value terms. Germany accounted for 45.0% of total import value, while the Netherlands contributed 40.4%, together making up 85.4% of all imports. The remaining value came from other partners.
