This growth was initially supported by increased activity from firms importing cocoa waste and rising demand for cocoa powder and oil in the food and cosmetics sectors. In 2019, new product launches in the chocolate and cocoa industry, coupled with growing use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, drove a sharp rise in imports, pushing the market volume to 31.6 thousand tonnes. The following year, a shift in consumer preferences toward healthy and sustainable products bolstered domestic production, which reached 26.7 thousand tonnes, helping to maintain the overall market size despite lower imports.

After peaking in 2020, the market contracted to 26.8 thousand tonnes in 2021 and further to 18.9 thousand tonnes in 2022, reflecting declines in both production and import volumes. A recovery emerged in 2023, with the market volume rising to 23.7 thousand tonnes. This rebound was primarily driven by the development of new applications for cocoa waste, such as organic fertilizers and cosmetic ingredients, which stimulated demand. Global cocoa supply constraints due to climatic factors also influenced the market, encouraging local producers to focus on research and alternative product development.

Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 30.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 19 110 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 6.6%.
