The Polish market for cocoa powder and cake expanded from 48 206 t in 2018 to a peak of 53 504 t in 2020, reflecting steady growth in consumption. The market then contracted over the next two years.

This decline was primarily driven by severe supply-side constraints in the global cocoa sector, as adverse weather and plant diseases in West Africa—the world's main growing region—reduced bean availability and sent prices soaring. These shortages limited raw material access for Polish processors, leading to a drop in market volume to 44 160 t by 2022.

Despite continued high cocoa prices, the market rebounded to 47 994 t in 2023. Polish manufacturers invested in broadening their product portfolios to meet consumer trends, while sustained demand for chocolate products helped lift cocoa powder consumption.

Poland's cocoa powder and cake production expanded for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 69 194 thousand US dollars, reflecting a sharp 27.7% rise compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production increased by 6.1%, translating to an annualized rate of 2.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 51 439 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 21.1%.

Poland's exports of cocoa powder and cake fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 3 048 tonnes, down 8.8% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 29.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.9%. The peak was in 2018 at 3 950 tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 67.4%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 15.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Serbia, and Romania were the top destinations for Poland's cocoa powder and cake exports in volume terms. Russia accounted for 27.6% of exports, Serbia for 17.4%, and Romania for 10.5%, together making up 55.6% of total export flows.
