The market for cocoa powder and cake in Ukraine began the period at 19 055 tons in 2018, then entered a phase of gradual contraction, falling to 16 774 tons by 2020. A rebound occurred in 2021, with consumption rising to 18 860 tons, supported by a recovery in domestic production to 4 623 tons.

A sharp market contraction to 14 478 tons followed in 2022. This decline was primarily driven by a global spike in cocoa bean prices, which doubled in the first half of the year. Adverse weather conditions, including drought and irregular rains in key producing nations Ghana and Côte d'Ivoar, severely impacted harvests and global supply. Concurrently, government price control policies in those countries and the dominant role of major international traders further constrained availability and increased costs for Ukrainian importers and manufacturers.

In 2023, the market volume recovered to 16 381 tons despite continuing global supply shortages and high cocoa prices. This growth was underpinned by a significant increase in domestic production, which reached 5 181 tons, its highest level in the observed period.

Ukraine's cocoa powder and cake production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 3 396 tonnes, marking a modest decrease of 5.7% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 6.7% overall, with an average annual growth rate of 2.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 4 509 tonnes, which represented a significant increase of 41.7% from the previous year. However, in 2019, production saw its largest decline of 20.2%.

Ukraine's exports of cocoa powder and cake have risen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 785 tonnes, showing a dramatic increase of 204.5% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 555.8%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 87.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Russia, Iran, and Moldova were the core destinations for Ukraine's cocoa powder and cake exports in volume terms. Russia accounted for 24.0% of exports, Iran for 20.2%, and Moldova for 7.7%. Together, these three countries made up 51.9% of total export flows.

The export market for cocoa powder and cake from Ukraine exhibited volatility during the observed period. Exports bottomed out in 2017 and peaked in 2020, with a 2.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, export value amounted to 1 063 thousand US dollars, representing a sharp gain of 95.1% year-over-year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 14.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Moldova, and Hungary were the key destinations for Ukraine's cocoa powder and cake exports in value terms. Russia accounted for 29.8% of exports, Moldova for 15.0%, and Hungary for 11.7%. Collectively, these three countries represented 56.5% of total export flows.

Imports cocoa powder and cake in Ukraine

In 2020, Ukraine's imports of cocoa powder and cake stood at 14 163 tonnes, which is 2.0% higher than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 10.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.4%. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2018 at 14 782 tonnes, marking the largest increase of 15.4% from the previous year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline of 6.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire were the main sources of cocoa powder and cake imports to Ukraine in volume terms. Germany accounted for 26.4% of imports, Ghana for 23.7%, and Côte d'Ivoire for 12.9%. Together, these three countries supplied 63.0% of total imports.

In 2020, Ukraine's imports of cocoa powder and cake in value terms were recorded at 31 243 thousand US dollars, which is 12.7% above the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 7.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.6%. The lowest import value was in 2019 at 27 717 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 7.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire were the primary suppliers of cocoa powder and cake to Ukraine in value terms. Germany accounted for 26.7% of imports, Ghana for 22.8%, and Côte d'Ivoire for 13.0%. Jointly, these three countries made up 62.5% of total import flows.
