Ukraine's cocoa butter production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 3 011 tonnes, marking a modest 5.7% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 6.7%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 2.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 3 998 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 41.7% occurring that year. Conversely, the most significant decline was observed in 2019, when production fell by 20.2%.

Exports cocoa butter to Ukraine

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Exports bottomed out in 2018 at just 1 tonne and peaked in 2020 at 59 tonnes, representing a dramatic 61-fold difference. In 2020, Ukraine's cocoa butter exports surged by 4 543.8% compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with an 8.7% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Spain, and Turkey were the top buyers of Ukrainian cocoa butter in volume terms, accounting for 34.4%, 28.3%, and 22.0% of exports, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 84.6% of Ukraine's total cocoa butter exports by volume.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations over this period. Export values dropped to a minimum of 8 thousand US dollars in 2018 and climbed to a maximum of 361 thousand US dollars in 2020, a 43-fold increase. In 2020, Ukraine's cocoa butter exports in value terms jumped by 2 077.4% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018, with an 11.7% decrease.

During 2017–2020, the Netherlands, Spain, and Turkey were the primary destinations for Ukrainian cocoa butter in value terms, with shares of 34.0%, 26.2%, and 22.3%, respectively. Combined, these three countries accounted for 82.5% of Ukraine's total cocoa butter export value.

After two years of growth, Ukraine's cocoa butter imports declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 9 991 tonnes, reflecting a slight year-on-year decrease of 1.3%. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports increased by 45.3%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 13.3%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 10 126 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 39.8% occurring in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Malaysia were the largest suppliers of cocoa butter to Ukraine in volume terms, contributing 47.1%, 13.0%, and 10.2% of imports, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 70.3% of Ukraine's total cocoa butter imports by volume.

Ukraine's cocoa butter import value increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 59 723 thousand US dollars, marking a 2.4% year-on-year rise. Between 2017 and 2020, import values grew by 51%, which corresponds to an annualized growth rate of 14.7%.
