Poland's coal market volume contracted significantly from 139.9 million tons in 2018 to 110.4 million tons in 2020, driven by a decline in domestic production from 125 million tons to 102 million tons over the same period. This reduction coincided with lower import levels, which fell from 20.1 million tons to 13.1 million tons.

The market entered a recovery phase in 2021–2022, with volume rising to 125.8 million tons by 2022. This rebound was supported by a partial recovery in production to 110.8 million tons and a sharp increase in imports to 20.6 million tons in 2022. In the following years, import levels declined to 8.4 million tons by 2024 while exports remained stable, indicating a shift in supply sources.

Poland's coal production volume declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 102 041 thousand tons of coal, reflecting an 11.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 20.9%, which equates to an annualized decline rate of 7.5%.

Poland's coal production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output of coal was valued at 10 996 million US dollars, marking a 29.8% drop from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 24.3%, translating to an annualized rate of 8.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 17 474 million US dollars, with the largest increase also occurring that year at 20.3%.

Exports coal from Poland

Exports in kind, K t

After a two-year reduction, Poland's volume of coal exports increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 4 734 thousand tons, showing a slight uptick of 2.8% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 35.4%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 13.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 4 607 thousand tons, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 28.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia, Austria, and Slovakia remained the main buyers of coal from Poland, accounting for 49.2%, 17.2%, and 13.0% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they formed 79.4% of total exports in kind.

Coal volumes leaving Poland declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export volume totaled 510 million US dollars, reflecting an 18.8% loss compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 38.1%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 14.8%.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, Czechia, Austria, and Slovakia were the primary buyers of coal from Poland in value terms, representing 48.4%, 20.7%, and 12.0% of exports, respectively. Collectively, they accounted for 81.2% of total exports in value terms.

Coal volumes imported by Poland declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Poland imported 13 097 thousand tons of coal, showing a decrease of 23.1% versus the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 4.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.5%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 20 138 thousand tons, with the largest increase also occurring that year at 47.0%.

Coal shipments to Poland from abroad declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 1 068 million US dollars, reflecting a decrease of 39.6% versus the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 31.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -11.8%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 2 276 million US dollars, with the largest increase also occurring that year at 46.5%.
