Earlier Report Observations

Myanmar's coal market volume expanded from 1 656 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 2 402 thousand tonnes in 2020. This growth was initially driven by state mining enterprises increasing domestic extraction. The introduction of stricter environmental impact assessments in 2019 began to constrain local production, leading to a greater reliance on imported coal, which surged to 522 thousand tonnes in 2020 despite pandemic-related logistical disruptions.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2021, with the market volume falling to 1 454 thousand tonnes. This decline was primarily due to tightened environmental compliance measures aligned with international commitments, which further reduced domestic output, while imports virtually ceased. The market partially recovered to 1 759 thousand tonnes in 2022 as state-owned enterprises pursued modernization and capacity enhancement efforts.

Throughout the period, legislative and policy shifts towards sustainable mining and cleaner energy sources consistently influenced market dynamics. State-owned companies remained the dominant force, adapting their operations to evolving regulatory and market conditions, including temporary pandemic-related measures and longer-term environmental standards.
