Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the U.S. coal market volume declined from 549.3 million tonnes to 427.7 million tonnes. The sharp contraction in 2020 was directly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced demand for coal in steel production and energy generation worldwide.

Market volume rebounded to 451.4 million tonnes in 2021 and reached 460.3 million tonnes in 2022, driven by the post-pandemic economic reopening that increased demand for coal in power generation and steelmaking.
