The Paraguayan citrus fruit market volume grew from 685 thousand tons in 2018 to 720 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was supported by abundant supply and accessible prices at major hubs like the Mercado de Abasto in Asunción, which kept fruit available for consumers.

Market volume declined to 709 thousand tons in 2021 as producers migrated to more profitable crops, reducing investments and planted area for citrus. The contraction deepened to 637 thousand tons in 2022, when a global surge in fertilizer prices and extended worldwide conflict raised production costs, despite census data showing an expansion in citrus cultivation area. In response, the Instituto Paraguayo de Tecnología Agraria (IPTA) advanced a project to produce certified virus-free seedlings, aiming to improve crop health and quality for sector recovery.

By 2023, the market recovered to 679 thousand tons, indicating a positive effect from investments in improved planting material and the sector's adaptation to external cost pressures.
