Earlier Report Observations

Citrus fruit production in El Salvador increased from 178.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 190.4 thousand tons in 2020, while the total market volume grew from 193.6 thousand tons to 218.2 thousand tons over the same period. Imports rose significantly, contributing to the expansion of market supply.

Production continued its upward trend, reaching 199.0 thousand tons in 2021, a year characterized by wholesale price monitoring for fruits and stable availability of imported Valencia oranges from Honduras. In 2022, government-led initiatives were pivotal: the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock promoted national fruit production through agricultural support packages and financing, while the state-owned AGROCENTA sold fertilizers at preferential prices. These measures helped drive production to 219.2 thousand tons, with market volume reaching 248.9 thousand tons.

In 2023, social protests in Guatemala during October disrupted supplies of Guatemalan fruits to Salvadoran markets, increasing prices and boosting demand for local citrus. This external factor supported a further rise in domestic production to 233.9 thousand tons, while citrus imports fell to 23.9 thousand tons. The government maintained constant price surveillance in wholesale markets to ensure stable supply and protect consumers.
