Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the market volume for watermelons and melons in Paraguay fluctuated between 156.3 and 160.1 thousand tonnes. It reached a peak of 160.1 thousand tonnes in 2020, supported by an increase in imports to 8.4 thousand tonnes, while domestic production remained steady at around 151.7 thousand tonnes. The following year, the market contracted slightly to 158.3 thousand tonnes as imports fell.

In 2022, the market volume declined to 155.9 thousand tonnes. This was primarily due to changed consumer behavior during a period of economic uncertainty, with households focusing on essential purchases, which reduced overall demand. Additionally, regional extreme weather events affected production quality and availability. During this year, local production in departments like Paraguarí remained robust, with over 150 hectares of watermelon cultivated, and new export agreements were reached with Uruguay.

The downward trend continued in 2023, with the market volume falling further to 154.1 thousand tonnes as imports dropped sharply to 2.5 thousand tonnes. Beyond 2023, import volumes show an increase to 5.7 thousand tonnes in 2024 and 6.5 thousand tonnes in 2025, while domestic production remains consistent at 151.5 thousand tonnes.
