Earlier Report Observations

The Caribbean cherry market volume grew from 5.4 thousand t in 2018 to 10.1 thousand t in 2023, driven primarily by a near-doubling of local production. This expansion began with Spanish companies enhancing high-quality cherry cultivation and exporting to the region, while global trade patterns were influenced by rising Chinese imports and cooperation with Central Asian suppliers.

A temporary contraction in 2020 and 2021 saw market volume fall, coinciding with unfavorable weather events in key global producing regions such as heavy rains in Spain and pollination issues in North America. Simultaneously, phytosanitary and climatic difficulties in France led to a sharp drop in its output, affecting worldwide supply dynamics.

Production rebounded strongly from 2022, supported by phytosanitary derogations issued to aid the sector and the launch of variety evaluation programs aimed at cultivation innovation. The market also adapted to broader shifts, including the China-US trade war diversifying global import flows and the entry of new late-season varieties influencing volumes and prices.
