From 2018 to 2021, the cereal germ market in Iraq grew from 49 468 t to 66 865 t, a 35% increase. This expansion was supported by the Iraqi Ministry of Trade's initiative in 2020 to enter the grain supply business, aiming to provide wheat to domestic flour mills and reduce reliance on imported flour, thereby strengthening local processing capacity. Preparations in 2021 to enhance grain reserves and food security further contributed to stable supply conditions.

In 2022, market volume plummeted by 26% to 49 201 t. This sharp decline was directly driven by a severe water crisis that cut wheat harvests to record-low levels, leading to shortages in strategic grain reserves and higher bread prices. Concurrent shifts in consumer behavior due to rising prices and exchange rate fluctuations of the dinar against the US dollar added pressure on demand.

The market rebounded strongly in 2023, surging 43% to 70 431 t. This recovery occurred alongside a broad increase in food prices in Iraq, which rose by up to 25% compared to the previous year, likely incentivizing production. At the same time, the Ministry of Trade intensified its monitoring and enforcement campaigns to curb price manipulation in food markets, aiming to stabilize supply conditions.
