Cassava starch production in SADC has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, production reached 21 638 tonnes, which is 13.2% lower than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 29.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 28 125 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 68.7%.

Exports cassava starch from SADC

Exports in kind, t

Exports of cassava starch from SADC have fallen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 814 tonnes, representing a decrease of 20.2% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 59.2%, with an average annual decrease of 25.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Burundi, Australia, and the United States formed the core group of markets for SADC's cassava starch exports in volume terms. Burundi accounted for 61.3% of exports, Australia for 5.3%, and the United States for 4.0%. Together, these three countries represented 70.5% of total export flows.

The market for cassava starch exports from SADC showed an unstable trend during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 at 312 thousand US dollars, marking a significant decline of 14.2% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, Burundi played a leading role in SADC's cassava starch exports in value terms, accounting for 70.3% of total flows. The remaining exports were distributed among other trading partners.

After a two-year decline, SADC's cassava starch imports increased in 2020. Import volume reached 16 222 tonnes, showing a slight improvement of 1.1% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 2.6%, equivalent to an average annual rate of 0.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 16 048 tonnes, with the largest annual decline occurring in 2018 at 1.9%.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, Thailand dominated SADC's cassava starch imports in volume terms, absorbing 76.2% of total flows. A large number of other partners accounted for the remainder.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 26.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.0%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 8 749 thousand US dollars.
