The cassava market in South-eastern Asia saw its volume grow from 71 063 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 78 037 thousand tonnes in 2021, despite a dip to 72 146 thousand tonnes in 2020. In value terms, the market fluctuated, falling to 16 364 million US dollars in 2019 before recovering to 23 840 million US dollars by 2021.

Market volume peaked at 80 374 thousand tonnes in 2022, driven by upgrades to processing facilities in Thailand and Vietnam which enhanced product quality and output. Government mandates for renewable fuels and growing industrial demand for cassava in animal feed further expanded consumption. While volume eased to 76 575 thousand tonnes in 2023, the market remained supported by continued technological advances in processing and sustained consumer interest in gluten-free and convenient frozen cassava products.

In 2020, South-eastern Asia produced 75 524 thousand tons of cassava, marking a slight reduction of 1.7% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 4.6%, with an average annual decline of 1.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 74 541 thousand tons. That year also saw the largest decline of 5.9%, while 2019 experienced the biggest increase of 3.1%.

In 2020, the output of cassava in South-eastern Asia was valued at 21 033 million US dollars, representing a significant year-over-year gain of 27.4%. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 16.4%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 5.2%. Exports cassava from South-eastern Asia

After two consecutive years of decline, cassava exports from South-eastern Asia rebounded in 2020. Exports reached 3 963 thousand tons, showing a substantial advance of 39.9% compared to the previous year. However, over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 57.7%, with an average annual decline of 24.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 833 thousand tons, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a drop of 55.6%.

Throughout the period from 2017 to 2020, China remained the dominant and nearly exclusive destination for cassava exports from South-eastern Asia, accounting for 97.0% of total shipments.

The market exhibited considerable volatility during these years. Export values reached their peak in 2017 and fell to their lowest point in 2019, representing a 2.4-fold difference between these extremes. In 2020, South-eastern Asia exported cassava worth 1 048 million US dollars, which is 72.1% higher than the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 609 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 46.5%.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Imports peaked in 2019 and reached their lowest point in 2017, with a 7.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, South-eastern Asia imported 584 thousand tons of cassava, representing a sharp decrease of 72.5% compared to 2019. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 124 thousand tons, which also saw the largest increase of 214.2%.

Following a two-year decline, foreign cassava supplies to South-eastern Asia increased in 2020. Imports stood at 588 million US dollars, showing a sharp uptick of 28.3% from 2019. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 16.5%, with an average annual decline of 5.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 458 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a drop of 27.6%.
