Earlier Report Observations

Cassava production in Mozambique, predominantly carried out by small-scale farmers for subsistence, declined to 6 019 thousand tons in 2019. This drop was associated with low producer prices in regions such as Nampula, which discouraged planting and reduced output. The market stabilized in 2020 at 6 026 thousand tons.

A consistent upward trend began in 2021, with production reaching 6 218 thousand tons, partly supported by growing consumer recognition of cassava leaves' nutritional and health benefits. The most substantial increase occurred in 2023, when output jumped to 7 611 thousand tons. This growth was driven by the installation of mobile processing units in Inhambane and a 38-million-meticais government investment under the SUSTENTA program, which expanded cultivated area, improved farmer techniques, and guaranteed industrial market access for smallholders.
