Earlier Report Observations
Cassava production in Panama expanded significantly from 17 320 tons in 2018 to over 30 500 tons in 2021, driven by institutional support for research and market diversification. The Agricultural Innovation Institute of Panama (IDIAP) promoted technology adoption in the cassava sector, while the Ministry of Commerce and Industry actively sought new international outlets for fresh and processed cassava. These efforts helped boost planned production volumes despite persistent challenges like high per-hectare costs and climate variability.
After peaking in 2021, production declined to 27 578 tons in 2022 and further to 24 399 tons in 2023. This downturn coincided with continued pressure from production costs and crop diseases, alongside structural limits on industrialization due to high domestic consumption of fresh cassava. The market remained anchored to traditional Brazilian and Valencia varieties, with most output destined for local sale rather than higher-value processed goods.
