Earlier Report Observations
Syrian camel meat and offal production dropped from 787 t in 2018 to 498 t in 2022. The armed conflict shrank camel herds, while repeated border trade halts with Turkey disrupted supplies. Concurrently, rising feed costs eroded producer margins, contributing to the decline.
In 2021, output was further constrained by mandatory slaughterhouse registration with the Food and Drug Authority, which enforced new safety standards. Production rebounded to 569 t in 2023, as elevated market prices encouraged higher output despite increased expenses for feed and veterinary drugs.
Policy changes, including the 2022 ban on frozen red meat imports that permitted only chilled camel meat, reshaped the market landscape but did not halt the overall contraction until the 2023 recovery.
