Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, camel meat production in Oman grew steadily from 15 909 t to 19 404 t, while the total market volume expanded from 16 863 t to 25 870 t. This growth was accompanied by a sharp rise in imports, which reached 6 468 t in 2023, indicating that increasing domestic demand was partly met through foreign supply.

In 2022, Oman remained a major importer of camel meat, sourcing significant volumes from Pakistan, Australia, and the UAE to supplement local production. This reliance on imports highlighted the gap between rising consumption and domestic output, which continued to increase but not sufficiently to meet the full market demand.

By 2024, imports of camel meat dropped to 1 211 t. During the same year, the Omani government launched the Food Security Lab with initial seed funding exceeding OMR 10 million, focusing on investments in agrifood projects to enhance domestic production capacity in the meat sector.
