Earlier Report Observations
Production of camel meat and offal in Jordan declined consistently from 885.6 tons in 2018 to 764.6 tons in 2023. The downward movement began in 2018 when the Ministry of Agriculture canceled the decision to import frozen red meat, allowing only fresh, chilled, and vacuum-packed beef and sheep meat. This regulatory shift affected the overall structure of the red meat market.
The contraction continued through the early 2020s. By 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture diversified meat import sources from 21 origins and specifically opened imports of chilled veal from Egypt and fresh lamb and goat meat from Syria. This policy increased the supply of competing red meats in the market, which likely reduced domestic demand for camel meat and contributed to the fall in its production.
