Earlier Report Observations

The European broken rice market volume fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 830.3 thousand tons and reaching a peak of 947.4 thousand tons in 2022. This period included a modest increase in 2019, a slight dip in 2020, and a significant 14% surge to 929.8 thousand tons in 2021.

Market expansion in 2022 was supported by an 8% rise in paddy rice production across the European Union, driven by improved yields in major producing countries. In France, cultivated area expanded in key regions, and despite a harvest delay that reduced yields, production of milled rice exceeded 41 thousand tons, increasing the supply of broken rice.

Following the peak, market volume contracted sharply to 702.9 thousand tons in 2023. During this period, European consumer trends continued to emphasize sustainability and traceability, with Italian rice farms adopting digital tools for supply chain transparency. New market entrants, such as the joint venture between Euricom and Fatima Rice Mills focused on premium rice supply, also indicated ongoing evolution in the sector.
