Earlier Report Observations

The market for bran, sharps, and residues from cereal processing in Zimbabwe began the period with active export activity, as state-owned and private milling companies shipped significant volumes, primarily to South Africa. A sharp expansion followed in 2020, with market volume jumping to 243.5 thousand tonnes. This surge was driven by government policy changes that increased private sector funding and transparency in agriculture, stimulating the processing industry. Concurrently, state promotion of sorghum and millet cultivation as ecologically suitable crops helped diversify the raw material base for bran production.

Market volume stabilized near 244 thousand tonnes in 2021, supported by the continued government backing for private sector involvement in agriculture. However, a significant contraction occurred in 2022, with volume falling to 214 thousand tonnes. This decline was directly caused by a 43% reduction in the national corn crop due to environmental and agricultural challenges, which severely constrained the supply of bran and residues from maize milling.

By 2023, the market recovered strongly, reaching 247.2 thousand tonnes, indicating a rebound from the previous year's supply shock.
