Earlier Report Observations
Production of bran and residues in Kazakhstan decreased from 924.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 682.3 thousand tons in 2021. This decline was influenced by raw material shortages and aging equipment at processing plants, alongside a persistently low level of agricultural waste recycling. The introduction of collection hubs and sorting lines for solid waste in 2020 aimed to improve recycling infrastructure, but production continued to fall due to these constraints.
Output began to recover in 2022, reaching 760.3 thousand tons in 2023. This turnaround was primarily driven by a 15% increase in the gross harvest of grain and leguminous crops in 2022, which expanded the raw material base. Simultaneously, a growth in the number of companies engaged in waste collection and sorting supported better processing of agricultural by-products. Phytosanitary certificate requirements for bran used in animal feeding affected export operations throughout the period, contributing to trade fluctuations.
The domestic market volume fluctuated, dropping to 356.8 thousand tons in 2022 as exports surged, then rising to 423.0 thousand tons in 2023 amid strong import growth. Government policies to diversify crop areas were implemented, and a record grain harvest was reported in 2024, shaping the market context.
