Earlier Report Observations
The barley market in Tajikistan grew from 110 thousand tons in 2018 to 160 thousand tons in 2019, primarily due to a jump in domestic production from 109 thousand tons to 156 thousand tons. Dry summer conditions in the region during 2018 increased grain demand, while steady purchases of Kazakh barley by Central Asian countries supported market activity.
Imports began playing a much larger role from 2020 onward, rising from 4 thousand tons to 60 thousand tons by 2023. This increase was linked to a 2.4% drop in global barley production in 2020 and a subsequent 9% expansion of sown area in Kazakhstan in 2022, which raised exports to Tajikistan. Logistics issues and higher transportation costs in 2023 also influenced market conditions.
After a decline in 2021, domestic production recovered to reach 170 thousand tons in 2023, supported by government plans to expand grain-sown areas for food security. Broader economic growth, increased remittances, and higher investment in the agricultural sector helped sustain demand and production capacity.
