Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the aubergine market in Middle Africa expanded gradually, with volume rising from 4 941 t to 5 067 t. This growth was supported by Cameroon's adoption of a framework law on food security in 2018, which created a regulatory foundation to strengthen local agricultural production, including aubergines. Additionally, global demand for aubergines was rising, with world exports increasing by 6.81% in 2020, encouraging local output to meet both domestic and export opportunities.

The market experienced a slight contraction to 5 010 t in 2021, coinciding with a stagnation in global harvested area for aubergines and a dip in worldwide exports, which constrained available supply. A recovery to 5 040 t followed in 2022, partly because reduced regional exports allowed more produce to remain domestically. However, volume dipped again to 5 021 t in 2023 as tax amendments introduced in Cameroon's 2024 finance law raised production and distribution costs, while a simultaneous jump in exports to 26 t further reduced local availability.

In 2024, aubergine trade intensified with imports reaching 81 t and exports 75 t, reflecting greater integration into global markets. Government initiatives to bolster food security and a worldwide consumer shift toward fresh, local vegetables continued to shape the landscape, even as global aubergine harvested area remained flat.
